Parable of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl: Matthew 13:44

The Hidden Treasure: Understanding the Kingdom

Good day, Beloveds.

Growing up, I thought Jesus just liked speaking in "riddles" when it came to parables. I found them tricky, but through the teaching of the Holy Spirit, I now understand them as the deep secrets of God’s dwelling place—and how we can experience that place while still on earth.

Why did Jesus speak this way? To help the people of His era relate what they didn't know to things they did know.

Why is it sometimes hard for us to understand?

Because we don't live in an agrarian society, and many of us aren't involved in farming. More importantly, we need the Holy Spirit to grant us revelation, as the Bible is spiritually "encrypted."

How can we understand?

By using our imagination to relate these ancient stories to modern life, and by submitting fully to the Holy Spirit so He can teach us. Remember: always invite the Holy Spirit before you read the Word.

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

Matthew 13:44 (NLT)

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field."

Heaven is a real Kingdom with a King and subjects; it isn't just blue sky and clouds. Jesus wants us to experience this Kingdom on earth, so He brought it near to us. He compares it to a treasure.

1. The Kingdom is a Treasure

A treasure is something of great worth. To "treasure" something means to hold it as precious. Does your life reflect that the Kingdom is more valuable than anything on earth? Or have you been waiting until you die to experience it?

2. The Kingdom is Hidden

The Scripture tells us this Kingdom can't be found by just anybody. It is hidden from the "naked eye," from the spiritually blinded, and from those who live only to please the flesh. God hid it because it is the beginning of eternity—only those willing to pay the price gain exclusive access.

3. The Kingdom Must Be Discovered

God is playing a divine game of "hide and seek" with us. He came to tell us the Kingdom exists so that we would seek it. He wouldn't say "Seek" if it couldn't be found. You don't have to seek the sun—you just look up and it’s there. But the Kingdom requires a search.

Matthew 6:33 (NLT): "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."

Trading Your Kingdom for His

Everyone wants what the Kingdom offers, but few are willing to pay the cost. The man in the parable sold everything to buy the field. To gain the spiritual, we must trade the flesh.

Many of us are like the rich young ruler—we do the "right things" (church, fasting, reading), but we cannot separate ourselves from our "riches." Jesus isn't against wealth; He is concerned with what has your heart. It could be your career, your house, your spouse, your traditions, or even your own body.

For me, it was my plans. I had a specific income I wanted, a mansion I dreamed of, and a desire to be one of the top businesswomen in South Africa. I had to "forget" that I had a degree. Jesus told me to let go of those self-serving goals and follow Him. I had to "sell" my old life to buy the land where the treasure was.

Luke 16:13 (NLT)

"No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money."

I realized my "other master" wasn't just money—it was me. I loved myself more than God because I wanted to give myself everything I desired. Even King Solomon, the wealthiest man ever, failed when he made himself (and his desires) a master above God.

The Invisible Kingdom

This Kingdom is in the spiritual realm. To be part of it, we must learn to be spiritual beings while still in human bodies. Think of it like a human wanting to be in the ocean; you aren't a fish, so you must learn to swim, tread water, and breathe differently.

John 3:6 (NKJV): "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

How to be "Born Again"

Being born again has nothing to do with the denomination of your church or the style of your worship songs. It is a spiritual transformation.

  • The Requirement: Believe Jesus is the Messiah who died for your sins and submit to Him as Lord. If He is only your "Savior" but not your "Lord," you are still ruling yourself.

How do you know you are born again?

  1. You love God and your neighbor above yourself.
  2. You forgive others as you have been forgiven.
  3. Your treasures are in Heaven, not on earth.
  4. You are no longer conformed to worldly culture or traditions.
  5. Your character produces the Fruit of the Spirit.
  6. You rely on the Word of God as your daily bread.

The Cost of Knowledge

I went to church all my life, but I only knew what the pastors chose to speak about. For example, I didn't truly understand the weight of sexual sin because I hadn't studied it for myself. I take full accountability for my past lack of knowledge.

When I wanted to learn how to make novelty cakes, I was self-taught; I researched, tested, and upskilled myself until I got it right. Why don't we apply that same effort to the things of God? Only the righteous will find the Kingdom, and righteousness is revealed through the fear of God and obedience.

Introspection

  • Do you have another master?
  • Do you rely on your church membership rather than a relationship with the Spirit?
  • Do you prioritize physical things over spiritual ones?
  • Do you only read verses instead of studying the Word?

Confession

Heavenly Father, I am sorry for my wrongs. Forgive me for having another master and for serving my own desires. Forgive me for thinking church attendance was enough. Forgive me for knowing the Bible but not living it. I repent for pleasing my flesh instead of Your Spirit.

Prayer

Father, thank You for this revelation. Teach me how to seek Your Kingdom and help me let go of everything that has captured my heart. Teach me to fear You so that I may live righteously. I offer my body and my life as a living sacrifice. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
